Hello everyone!

I'm planning to go to the Sherlock Holmes exhibition at the weekend - has anyone been? Would you recommend it?

I'm going to be buying my deerstalker in time for Sherlocked!!!

Difficult to say really - I'd say no but I'd imagine many others will say yes. I personally wasn't that impressed with it and I do like going to museums and exhibitions.

It's hard to have a whole exhibit I think on this kind of subject.

The majority of the exhibition is made up of victorian life stuff - there are a lot of pictures of london roads at that time ect. There are some film posters from old Holmes films, there are lots of montages playing from various tv and film versions. There are some original works from Edgar Allen Poe (Which were nice to see) who's piece inspired ACD and a couple of surviving Mrs Beeton's that carried the first printing of the first story. They also have displays of victorian crime solving stuff. There is also a display case with props from films and Sherlock's Belstaff.

Having said that it's not expensive for what it is and won't take you long to get round if you do want to go.

I don't recall how much the deerstalkers were but the dressing gowns (based on the Sherlock version) they were selling wee extraordinarily expensive.

I studied Forensic Science at university so I'd be very interested in the victorian crime solving items as well. You've actually sold it to me even if you weren't trying to!

I've just had a quick look and if you are intending to buy a Deerstalker at the exhibition they are £47. If anyone was wondering they have a blue silk dressing gown for £297 and a camel one for £670.

I think I can justify £47 on a new hat! I've always wanted a deerstalker and how often do you get a semi-legitimate excuse to wear one these days?!

You could inadvertantly start of a trend if you wear it outside. I didn't hate it and some of it was interesting to see, I just wouldn't class it as fantastic.....

I hope you have a good time when you go and if you can post here after it would be nice to see what you thought. The crime stuff was interesting, I just wasn't that fussed about a load of pictures of street scenes as the Victorian era is very well documented and you do see that kind of stuff frequently. I thought it would have nice if they had been able to play full episodes or all of the films so people could see versions they aren't familiar with instead of looped snippets, but I imagine that would be a liscensing issue.

I'm actually arriving a couple of weeks early in April to catch the Sherlock Holmes exhibit at the Museum of London right before it ends.

I'm also considering going to the Wellcome exhibition on forensics:

Anyone interested?

I really enjoyed the Sherlock Holmes exhibit at the Museum of London. There was a lot of the literary history, and lots of art from around the time it was written, along with all the forensic gadgetry and costumes. If you take you're time and read all the panels, there's lots to learn!

I really enjoyed it too! I had a good day there today. Lots of mood lighting and tiny handwriting. It was very interesting. As was the rest of the museum as well. I'd definitely recommend it!

And my new deerstalker is awesome! Fits like a dream! :-)

  • 2 weeks later...

You could also go to North Gower street to see 221b and grab one of the Sherlock sandwiches from Speedy's! So many tourists taking photos pretending to hail a cab outside of the flat!

That is so mean.

(Flying in 22nd)

-_-

You want mean, they opened the exhibition something like 10 days after I left London on my last trip and are ending it 10 days before I arrive for this one. (I fly in on the 22nd too!)

I definitely had that (and real 221B) added to my schedule already! Does anyone else have any more suggestions of places on screen? I was wondering because if I go ahead and make a list, most of it is probably going to be of stuff that's filmed in Cardiff.

And JHW--I feel ya. So much sad.

(Also on my list--canadian pubs. Reasons.)

Tower 42 on Old Broad Street was a filming location for the bank in episode 2.

This website is very useful for making yourself a little Sherlock tour

Have fun!

Just as an FYI and not to discourage you from going but the 'real' 221B isn't actually the 'real' one either - it didn't actually exist when ACD wrote the Holmes stories. He picked the address because it didn't exist.

Locations, you may not be able to get into some.

Chad Sanderson in the The Blind Banker was filmed in the entrance lobby at Tower 42 on Old Broad Street

Trafalgar Square features in The Blind Banker as well.

St. Bart's

Russell Square (where John meets Mike Stamford)

Oh just remembered one that's not on the Sherlockology list, the start of Charlotte Street where it meets Percy Street was in Ep 1 - I think when they were walking to Angelo's. You can see the hair dressers, Andrew Jose, when they walk past.

(I used to live on that road so recognised it straight away) https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@51.517991,-0.134299,3a,75y,268.36h,90.74t/data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1sOSSO1MMzjDTPOAqgXmuq7A!2e0

Thanks to those chiming in! I really appreciate it.

I would like to do St. Bart's for sure, as well as Russel square--Is the restaurant used for Angelo's in London?

(Checking out the link now, thanks so much!)

Edit: I has a sad. The stag night pub crawl was entirely in Cardiff.

I really wanted to do that.
