One was with a black sharpie on normal book paper pages (the ink might absorb into the page fibres a bit if the nib was on there too long) but I think looked nice and the other was with a bronze sharpie on the shinier type pages. I would say that if it's being signed with a metallic Sharpie, give it time to dry before you close the book. Also as said above, watch out for the Sharpie bleeding through to the other side of the page in paperbacks. For those you're better off using a biro. Should be fine, my son has got a couple of DK books that he gets signed and we've never had a problem.
