The films you've seen, in 2017

I thought y'all might like to keep everyone updated on the films you've been watching and what you thought of them. New or old, good or bad. Spoilers to a minimum for anything new obvs.

Zootropolis: I have a problem with modern American CG 3d animation, but I confess this didn’t look too bad. I think Zootropolis has pretensions of being quite deep, but really it’s just the typical story of an underdog (or underrabbit) saving the day. The voice acting was largely pretty good, but Idris Elba was strangely terrible (although he wasn’t good in Jungle Book either so maybe it’s just not his thing). Overall, not a bad way to spend 90 minutes.

Midnight Special: Imagine E.T. but with Elliott and the alien combined, and all the fun sucked out. All the characters take everything so seriously – I counted two lines that could maybe have been considered vaguely light-hearted – but then given what they are dealing with that actually made perfect sense and made me care more about what they were trying to achieve.

The Witch: Now this I really liked. Genuinely creepy and engrossing, and kept me guessing with who, if anybody, was behind what was going on. The 17th century speech added to the atmosphere and the acting was top-notch all round (except for the youngest kids, but what can you do?) Highly recommended.

Oh, and although technically I saw this towards the end of last year, I thought the live action Jungle Book was awesome, and Mowgli was one of the best child acting performances I’ve seen.

Let's see if I can remember! (Yes, my memory is that bad!)

Cinema:

Rouge One - Third time seeing it, loved it

Passengers - Was enjoyable until the ending

La La Land - Wasn't what I expected it to be. Still not sure if I liked it or not

At Home:

Coherence - My second watch of this film, I highly recommend it to all

Lord of the Rings Trilogy - Love it! Just love it!

The Girl on the Train - Had heard good things about this, but was very disappointed with it

You're not alone there, John, played the games and I enjoyed the movie, too.

Also, Assassin's Creed is the only film I've seen this year so far.

I actually nearly fell asleep. And I wasn't even that tired before seeing the film

Zootropolis was quite deep in the sense that it had the whole underlying story of don't judge people without knowing them.. just because someone is different from you, (race/religion/species), I thought that part of it was done extremely well. The rest of it was fine...

Midnight Special, I'm not sure it was meant to be "fun" in the way ET was.. I liked the 80's vibe of it and I loved that it was darker in tone. Michael Shannon is probably one of the best and most underrated actors around right now

Anywho...

I have seen

Think Like A Man Too

Jack Reacher Never Go Back

Keeping Up With The Joneses

Girl On The Train

Parenthood

The Great Outdoors

Withnail & I

A Monster Calls

The Sitter

Nerdland

Think that is it so far... Watching Stir Crazy at the moment, La La Land, Live By Night and Manchester By The Sea are planned for the weekend

I also revisited XXX and The Looney Looney Looney Bugs Bunny Movie as well

I felt like people read more into Zootropolis than was there due to the...interesting...political and racial climate in the US and elsewhere last year. I figure that's why it got the Golden Globe.

I have to disagree... I saw it without any knowledge of it asides the voice cast and that was the thing I took from it most of all and that is coming from someone that doesn't follow politics and rarely pays to much attention to the news too. I believe that was the story that the creators were going for and conveyed that in a way that kids would be able to get that point too which is no bad thing

that said, I still don't think it was the best animated movie released last year... Angry Birds was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better. Sausage Party too!

Hail, Caesar!: Maybe I'm not well versed enough in the old Hollywood studio system because I think most of this film went over my head. I enjoyed some of the set pieces (young Han Solo's stuff was alright and I do love any dance routine with sailors) but the actual meat of the story was just kinda dull to me.

I also started watching King of Comedy but gave up after 5 minutes. I just couldn't be bothered.

Only cinema experience of the year so far has been MANCHESTER BY THE SEA and I gave it a top notch five stars. For such a long film, it really did know how to absorb you and I would be shocked if this does not win and Oscar or two.

Off to see LA LA LAND on Wednesday with visits also planned for T2, PREVENGE and SPLIT for this month.

I have a feeling this year is going to be excellent for movies all around. MOONLIGHT and FENCES will keep me at the cinema in Feb!

In regard to the ones not at the cinema then I generally watch cult/horror movies. Highlights this month have been RATS - NIGHT OF TERROR and NIGHT SHIFT.

watched a few more..

Spy Hard

Dracula Dead and Loving It

La La Land

Live By Night

The Watch

Easy A

Those are some I can remember, there may be a few more

La La Land can I just say, as much as I enjoyed it, considering it isn't really my cup of tea, I much prefer my random song and dance numbers when Muppets are involved

  • 2 weeks later...

The Magnificent Seven-so boring

REALLY?!! I loved that movie! (I assume you're talking about the 2016 remake)

Yeah, i wasnt really paying attention so i will give it a 2nd chance

You really should. I found it great fun, and different enough from the original remake and the original Seven Samurai to be worthwhile. The cast were awesome and action was great. Obviously, no one has the same taste, but I just found it to be a great fun western.
