This is a thread for everyone to talk about WWE's SMACKDOWN show, aired on Friday nights in the UK! (Taped on Tuesdays in America and aired on Thursday)

---------------------------------------------------

6th January 2005

Matches:

Rey Mysterio beat Eddie Guerrero

Doug Basham beat Rob Van Dam

Cruiserweight Champion Funaki beat Akio

Kurt Angle beat Brian Black

Main Event: Undertaker vs. Heidenreich & Paul Heyman (No Contest, Handicap Match)

---------------------------------------------------

I think Smackdown has sadly gone downhill as of late. If you look at who is being focused on, with people like Luther Reigns, Mark Jindrak, Heidenreich, and all the women getting air time when there are so many great cruiserweights and other talents that aren't being used or have been released, it sucks!

Heyman in the casket - who didn't see that coming? WWE don't know what to do with Paul, and I really hope that whatever differences they have they let him do an ECW ppv, and do it properly!

Too many women! If Vince thinks that getting good looking women on the show is the answer to getting higher ratings then I think he's wrong. How about giving us some good wrestling? I admit that Rey and Eddie had a GREAT match, and that showcases what the Smackdown talent are capable of! So why not do more of it instead of wasting time on pointless women?

JBL/Amy Weber/Kurt Angle/Joy Giovanni/Big Show - It was quite funny, but Kurt Angle speaks best through his in-ring performances and I'd much rather watch him wrestle PROPERLY and not in these stupid challenges.

Luther Reigns and Mark Jindrak are going nowhere ... while Team Angle with Shelton and Charlie was a good idea because they were a viable tag team, Luther and Mark suck! At least JBL has the Bashams who actually have talent ...

The battle rap between John Cena and Kenzo Suzuki was quite entertaining and to be honest I'd rather just be able to laugh at Suzuki rather than watch his matches because they're not the most exciting things in the world! Cena should be heading to Wrestlemania as a contender for the MAIN belt, or at least soon after that. Perhaps dropping the title at Wrestlemania?

I'm glad they're letting Funaki be a WRESTLER! He's having some good solid matches and luckily is no longer a comedy figure on Smackdown although it's good to have that personality to back up his wrestling skills.

Sadly there didn't seem to be a whole lot of good matches on the show this week. I hope it improves soon!

WWE Cruiserweight Title Match:

Funaki beat Nunzio

---------------------------------------------------

Sadly I am liking Smackdown less and less by each show. I'm not liking the focus on skits revolving around the WWE Championship at the Royal Rumble as they are getting far too much screen time. I've never really enjoyed shows where skits are the final thing ... I've always believed in a main event being the finish to a show! And even though the Cruiserweight Title match was the highest placed match on the show, it still wasn't given a main event slot - and it was far too short anyway. Reports say it was cut by a couple of minutes which is very disappointing when they can find the time to show all the JBL/Angle/Big Show crap!

RVD is injured and out so it made sense for him and Rey to lose the titles although it worries me a bit that the Bashams got them because I can see JBL/Bashams/Orlando going the same way as Evolution to a certain extent - and I'm begging now, PLEASE do not put a title on Orlando! It's a shame that RVD got injured because I was enjoying his teaming with Rey ... although I've also enjoyed Booker/Eddie lately! I suppose at least the Bashams do have talent and it could have been worse with Jindrak and Reigns winning, so we should be thankful!

This show, the guy who faced Kurt Angle actually got quite a good look-in compared to the ones in the past. I'm sure eventually they'll have someone go nearly 3 minutes to try and establish them, someone new ... not sure who though but surely that's got to be the plan because it's not really doing anything for Kurt. Maybe it'd be good to give Daniel Puder his first real match like that considering their confrontation during Tough Enough, but he is being pushed as a heel now so I doubt it'll be him. I'd guess someone completely new.

Cena's becoming pretty boring now ... oddly I find Kenzo funnier these days, and I'd just like to see Cena have a decent championship match for a change. That's what's lacking from Smackdown lately - good quality long matches. They have people like Rey and Eddie who do great together, but there are others on the roster who are capable too!

Funaki's doing pretty well as the champion, at least he's being used properly - rumour has it that WWE are going to bring in some more cruiserweights so it'd be nice to see some quality matches out of them! They're more than capable of putting entertaining matches on - just look back to WCW and ECW, and even to a few in NWA TNA.

Smackdown is way behind RAW in my books right now ... less talk, more action please!

---------------------------------------

Kurt Angle beat Nunzio

Rey Misterio beat Mark Jindrak

Big Show beat Doug & Danny Basham

Undertaker v. Rene Dupree ended in a double count out

Booker T beat Eddie Guerrero

----------------------------------------

This week's show was good mainly for the main event, as Eddie always puts on great matches and Booker deserves a chance to shine. I hope they don't turn either of these guys heel because Eddie just wouldn't work as a heel now ... everyone loves his character and his match work, and Booker only just turned face again REALLY so a heel turn wouldn't work in my opinion. He moves on to the semi's of the tournament ... facing the winner of the Cena and Orlando match next week.

Rey managed to do a decent enough job working with Jindrak which is no surprise, I love watching Rey's matches and I'm looking forward to his match with Kurt Angle in Japan in the first round of the Number 1 Contender tournament! They need to stop the crap Angle Invitational stuff though or at least have someone go over ...

Nice of them to destroy the tag titles on SDown as well with a handicap match involving Big Show. I guess if Batista could beat the champs on Raw then Show had to on Smackdown! Stupid really. What's the point of having the tag titles?

Taker and Dupree were counted out when Luther came out and held Taker so he couldn't get back into the ring. This gives the winner of Rey and Angle a "bye" to the final of the tournament at No Way Out. I'd say it was obvious that they want Angle in the final and just not have him wrestle too much so they're letting him have a bye. But I guess they could surprise us all by having Rey win, maybe with some HBK interference but that's just me dreaming lol

Cena's over as hell ... about time he did some decent in ring work though ...

And I get a few newsletters .. err ...

My favourite is LEWD (Legendary Extreme Wrestling Digest) which is at http://www.inlewd.com/search/subscribe.shtml

Then there's Wrestling 365 (W365-subscribe@topica.com) as well!

I'm sure there's a million others, but those are the ones I receive the most and are usually of a good quality :D

I read the spoilers this morning, sounds like he makes quite the impact

You can say that again!!

Im really getting excited about Batista, i really hope they use him well and develope him in a strong way. He seems to have all the tools to take him right to the top.

I cant wait for the Batista v HHH match up, i really hope that HHH puts him over cleanly and with respect.

Welcome to the Batista era!

Bless him, he looked pretty tiny compared to Big Show .. and he looked silly running to the ring

But he did well, he's got an interesting character going on .. hope he doesn't get TOO cocky, like with fixing his tie in the mirror etc .. they need to keep him cool but not cocky, cuz he'll end up like Poser Orton grrr lol
