Horror Con

With George Romero being hyped as latest the 'big guest', and events springing up in every town - is it time to revisit the old question 'should there be a horror con?'.

I don't understand the logic that there is no UK market, when successful American horror cons are going on almost every month.

I'd much prefer the organisers to say 'I'm sorry I'm simply not interested' than to peddle some excuse that simply isn't true.

The logic is based on logistics and finances and is sound.

You can have regular ones in America because they cost less to organise. That's the simple answer I'm afraid.

And believe me, horror is my favourite genre, but I understand why it's not possible here compared to how much they get in America. It's just completely different.

SM have a lot of experience in this. They would do it if they felt it would work.

I'm pretty sure I asked for this before. ;) Technically per the forum rules the first post is on the line for what's allowed already. The posts I've hidden now are definitely crossing the line. The general rule of thumb is "if you can find an event on Google with the posted info it is too much." Thank you for understanding.

They do have some horror cons in uk which for obvious reasons I am not able to mention names on these boards. The trouble is the majority of them are small and often hard to get to and very poorly advertised.

David, off topic but was it yourself I once talked to on the forum about our love of Twilight Zone. I have finally upgraded to bluray and only fittingly have started buying the original twilight zone seasons on blu ray. Wow just wow

I agree, where did the other posts go.

That's really poor moderating.

Anybody would read Davids post, and think that's the truth. When the other posts gave evidence that view was clearly wrong. I specifically kept it to 'mainland Europe' so not to break any rules.

No wonder that a horror con never happens. As I said, I'd prefer if the people in charge just were honest and said 'I'm not interested, its not my bag'.

I will try to word this differently then. It has been proven 100% that horror conventions can work in Europe. I feel there is a gap in the marketplace for a UK con. I also have no doubt that Showmasters are the people to do it. It might take a few years to build up but i could easily see a SM uk horror con being the go to place for horror on this continent. It could have say the european horror awards anually with maybe some premiers and short films to subsidise the guests. A properly managed event would work 100%. The uk has a great tradition in horror, we should have a horror con.

Not forgetting that we also have a major horror film festival in the major cinemas in London, sponsored by one of the biggest television companies.

There is a market, and its arguably even bigger than most of the other genres that are covered.

Another option Showmasters could consider if they didn't want to go down the route of a full on horror con is just have an extended section for one of the shows like they do for the sports guests at some of the cons. It would give them a better understanding of the popularity and fan reaction and if a viable success it would be something they could consider doing again or expanding. Just a suggestion, obviously SM have a far greater understanding of costs profits and logistics of these shows than I could ever have.

Certainly for a big event like LFCC it's got to be worth considering a Horror section or area of the hall, there are plenty of UK guests that could and have been invited in the past to Showmasters events that could be located in this area for autos, along with photo area, a talk area and merchandise stalls specialising in Horror. This spreads the risk a bit , compared to starting with a pure Horror event and also gives Showmasters the opportunity to see how popular these guests are, how many autos they sell, how many photoshoots etc

If you look at this years guests so far, you could have George Romero in this area, probably also Tyler Mane and you could also include people like Juliet Landau, Cerina Vincent and Sharni Vinson.

The only danger of that is that the line-up could be weakened, and people just pulled together because they were in the background of some film.

It needs at least one big named guest, a reunion, or some kind of thought behind it.

Rather than just a bunch of cheap names thrown together, and put in a corner and called 'horror zone'.

Agreed. For example, Anne Bobby wouldn't attract many alone but stick her in a proper Nightbreed reunion with Craig Sheffer, Doug Bradley etc then you'll have more of a success!

This worked very well when Showmasters invited Clive Barker for a Hellraiser reunion - please invite him back!!!!

In the 'guest suggestions' section, someone is suggesting a proper Nightmare on Elm St. reunion across all movies. This in theory wouldn't work by inviting a couple at a time, you'll need a proper reunion (with scheduled talks, photoshoots..) that will attract people from all over the world to come visit.

With that said, it comes with a (financial) risk and I can understand why this doesn't happen.

Cast reunions don't bother me; I would rather see leads from several movies than bit parts from one franchise.

There are enough cult horror stars out there.

Jeffrey Combs; Barbara Crampton; Danielle Harris; Katherine Isabelle; Bruce Campbell; Bobby Rhodes; Asia Argento; John Saxon; Sharni Vinson; Jane Levy; Michael Gross; Dee Wallace; Zach Galligan; Reggie Bannister; Angus Scrimm.....and then the directors.....

Could go on for ever.

I'm a completest, so I would love to see more reunions!

Ooohh a "Nightbreed" reunion would be great, the exteended Cabal cut comes out on blu ray later this year too.

Yes, I made a post in the suggestion thread a few months back requesting another attempt of a Nightbreed reunion for this year's Winter London Comic Con show - in line with the bluray release.

Bring back Clive Barker, cinematographer Robin Vidgeon (who didn't show up last year), Craig Sheffer (who cancelled last year), Doug Bradley etc.. Hell, why stop there, lets invite David Cronenberg (a headlining guest) and legendary music composer Danny Elfman. One can wish :P
