Scofield had screwed them all. His genius plan had failed, and the COs had come running in minutes, caught the lot of them in the infirmary, and dragged them all to solitary. T-bag had promised Scofield through the dark of the next cell all of the nasty things he would do to the boy, in return for bringing this unholy punishment down upon them all.

They were left in the black for a month, but T-bag was a patient man, the anticipation of the kill was sometimes almost as sweet as watching the light go out of their eyes. Back in gen pop, it was easy enough to get hold of a weapon. Easy enough to corner Scofield coming in from the exercise yard, his little band of misfits having turned on him, and the fish didn’t even fight him back.

There was no fear, no fight in his eyes. Just an acceptance. T-bag felt cheated. He wanted something more from Scofield, and twisted the knife deeper and harder until the boy finally screwed his face up with pain, because something was finally hurting more than the loss of Linc the sink. In fact, just before his eyes slid shut, there was an emotion on his face that T-bag couldn’t place until he was lying on his bunk later.

It had been relief. And suddenly, the satisfaction of the revenge turned sour.

T-bag had given the fish what he wanted.
